Accelerated TMS FAQS
What is TMS and accelerated TMS?
TMS therapy, including accelerated protocols, is typically performed under the supervision of a trained healthcare provider and involves placing an electromagnetic coil on the scalp to deliver targeted magnetic pulses to specific brain regions. The pulses induce electrical activity in the brain, which can help modulate neural circuits and alleviate symptoms associated with certain neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Accelerated TMS describes having more than one TMS session in a day.
How many sessions can I have in a day?
The number of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) sessions that can be administered in a day with accelerated TMS can vary based on individual factors, treatment protocols, and clinical considerations. Generally, accelerated TMS involves multiple sessions in a single day, allowing for quicker treatment compared to the standard TMS treatment of single daily sessions.
In some accelerated TMS protocols, patients might receive two to three sessions per day, while in more intensive protocols, the number of sessions could be higher. However, the specific number of sessions and the duration of treatment depends on the specific condition being treated, the patient’s response and tolerance to the treatment and recommendations from medical professionals.
Most treatment sessions take 30 minutes. The gap between sessions needs to be a minimum of 30 minutes.
Can accelerated TMS help treat depression?
Research shows accelerated TMS to be an effective, safe treatment for depression. NICE approved TMS for depression in the UK in 2015 and noted a “consistently positive outcomes in many studies and a good safety profile… commentary from patients was positive and they described significant benefits to their quality of life including the advantages for some patients of being able to stop oral antidepressant medications”.
We offer accelerated TMS for depression as it has shown to be a convenient option for those seeking hope for the rapid relief of symptoms. Accelerated TMS delivers the benefits of traditional TMS for depression, but in a shorter time frame.
Please note, bipolar is not suitable for accelerated TMS treatment.
Why would I have accelerated TMS?
It speeds up treatment, meaning the number of times you have to travel to clinic is reduced. This means that treatment can be scheduled into a holiday, half term etc., reducing the inconvenience of treatment.
What are the benefits of accelerated TMS treatment?
- Faster Relief:
The primary advantage of accelerated TMS is the potential for faster symptom relief. By condensing the treatment schedule and delivering multiple sessions in a day, patients may experience improvements in their symptoms more rapidly compared to the standard TMS protocol, which usually involves daily sessions over several weeks. - Convenience and Compliance:
Accelerated TMS may be more convenient for some patients, as it reduces the overall treatment duration. This could potentially improve treatment adherence and compliance, especially for individuals with busy schedules or limited availability for regular treatment sessions. - Reduced Disruption:
Shortening the treatment period with accelerated TMS could lead to less disruption to daily life, as patients spend fewer weeks undergoing treatment. This could be particularly beneficial for patients who need to return to work or other responsibilities sooner.
Does it increase effectiveness of TMS treatment?
While accelerated TMS may offer certain advantages, it’s important to note that its effectiveness and appropriateness depend on the specific condition being treated and individual patient factors. It has been shown to be just as effective as “normal” single daily TMS treatment.
Is Accelerated TMS right for me?
It’s important to note that while accelerated TMS has potential advantages, it may not be suitable for all patients or conditions. The decision to pursue accelerated TMS should be made in consultation with our clinican who will assess your medical history, treatment needs, and response to therapy. TMS, whether standard or accelerated, should always be administered under medical supervision to ensure safety and efficacy.
What should I expect at my accelerated TMS treatment sessions?
The TMS sessions are the same as for standard TMS, usually lasting 30 minutes. Find out more about what to expect.
How long does accelerated TMS take each day?
Each session is 30 minutes and a minimum break of 30 minutes is necessary between sessions. The number of sessions per day that your prescription stipulates will determine how long you will be in clinic. The gap between sessions can be spent in waiting in reception or at a nearby cafe.
Is accelerated TMS covered by insurance?
TMS for treating depression is covered by most insurers. However, not all insurers allow multiple TMS sessions in a day, please check with our patient advisor or your insurance provider.
