Men’s Radio Station and Smart TMS on rTMS and Adolescent Mental Health

February 23, 2020 - Smart TMS

Men’s Radio Station

Raising awareness of men’s mental health is vital. According to the Samaritans, men are three times more likely to commit suicide in the UK. In fact, the group with the highest rate of suicide is males between the age of 45 and 49.

CEO of Smart TMS, Gerard Barnes, spoke with Men’s Radio Station’s presenter, Luke, about how rTMS treatment can be life changing for a majority of patients.

Millennial Mental Health

Gerard explains how vital effective treatment for depression in adolescence is;

“50% of people with a mental health issue had it at age 14 of less; 75% had it at the age of 18 or less. So, mental health issues in that adolescent period set you up, or hold you back (depending on your point of view), for life because that’s a life long impact.”

Luke questions whether rTMS should be used sooner rather than later and our answer to that is, “Yes!”. Antidepressants, which may be offered to a teenager with depression, are systemic. This means that the chemicals flood the entire body. rTMS, on the other hand, only focuses on the small area of the brain.
